An adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs can add detail and description to our writing, making it more interesting and informative.
Here are some examples of adverbs:
- How: quickly, slowly, carefully, loudly, quietly
- Where: here, there, inside, outside, upstairs, downstairs
- When: now, then, yesterday, tomorrow, soon, later
- To what extent: very, quite, extremely, hardly, barely
How to identify adverbs
Adverbs can be identified by the questions they answer:
- How? Adverbs that answer the question "how?" describe how an action is performed. For example, in the sentence "The dog ran quickly," the adverb "quickly" describes how the dog ran.
- Where? Adverbs that answer the question "where?" describe where an action takes place. For example, in the sentence "The bird flew outside," the adverb "outside" describes where the bird flew.
- When? Adverbs that answer the question "when?" describe when an action takes place. For example, in the sentence "I woke up early," the adverb "early" describes when I woke up.
- To what extent? Adverbs that answer the question "to what extent?" describe how much or how little of something there is. For example, in the sentence "I am very happy," the adverb "very" describes how happy I am.
Types of adverbs
There are many different types of adverbs, but some of the most common include:
- Adverbs of manner: These adverbs describe how something is done. For example, quickly, slowly, carefully, loudly, quietly.
- Adverbs of place: These adverbs describe where something happens. For example, here, there, inside, outside, upstairs, downstairs.
- Adverbs of time: These adverbs describe when something happens. For example, now, then, yesterday, tomorrow, soon, later.
- Adverbs of degree: These adverbs describe how much or how little of something there is. For example, very, quite, extremely, hardly, barely.
- Adverbs of frequency: These adverbs describe how often something happens. For example, always, usually, sometimes, never.
How to use adverbs in sentences
Adverbs can be used in sentences in a variety of ways. They can be placed before the verb they are modifying, after the verb, or between the verb and the object.

- Carefully: The girl painted the picture carefully. (Adverb after verb)

Adverbs can also be used to modify adjectives or other adverbs. For example:

- Quite quickly: The train went quite quickly. (Adverb modifying adverb)
Teaching adverbs to Year 1 students
When teaching adverbs to Year 1 students, it is important to start with the basics. Explain to students that adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Give them some examples of adverbs and tell them what they mean.
