Introduction
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity. ADHD has three subtypes: inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive, and combined.
The inattentive type of ADHD is characterized by difficulty paying attention, forgetfulness, and difficulty organizing and completing tasks. The hyperactive/impulsive type of ADHD is characterized by restlessness, fidgeting, and difficulty sitting still. The combined type of ADHD includes symptoms of both the inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive types.
Knowing your ADHD type can be helpful in developing a treatment plan. It can also help you to understand your strengths and weaknesses and to develop coping mechanisms.
How to Take the Quiz
The following quiz is a self-assessment tool that can help you to determine your ADHD type. The quiz is based on the criteria for ADHD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5).
To take the quiz, simply answer each question honestly and to the best of your ability. There are no right or wrong answers. The quiz is for informational purposes only and should not be used as a substitute for a diagnosis from a qualified mental health professional.
Quiz
Instructions: Answer each question honestly and to the best of your ability. There are no right or wrong answers.
Inattentive Type
- Do you often have difficulty paying attention to details or make careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities?
- Do you often have difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities?
- Do you often seem not to listen when spoken to directly?
- Do you often not follow through on instructions and fail to finish schoolwork, chores, or workplace duties (e.g., starts tasks but quickly loses focus and is easily distracted)?
- Do you often have difficulty organizing tasks and activities?
- Do you often avoid, dislike, or are reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework)?
- Do you often lose things necessary for tasks or activities (e.g., school materials, pencils, books, tools, wallets, keys, paperwork, eyeglasses, mobile telephones)?
- Are you often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli?
- Are you often forgetful in daily activities?
Hyperactive/Impulsive Type
- Do you often fidget or squirm with your hands or feet?
- Do you often have difficulty remaining seated when required to sit still?
- Do you often run about or climb excessively in situations where it is inappropriate (in adolescents or adults, may be limited to restless feelings)?
- Do you often have difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly?
- Are you often "on the go" or acting as if driven by a motor?
- Do you often talk excessively?
- Do you often blurt out answers before questions have been completed?
- Do you often have difficulty waiting your turn?
- Do you often interrupt or intrude on others (e.g., butt into conversations or games)?
Scoring
To score the quiz, add up the number of questions that you answered "yes" to for each type of ADHD. If you answered "yes" to five or more questions for the inattentive type or hyperactive/impulsive type, then you may have that type of ADHD. If you answered "yes" to five or more questions for both types of ADHD, then you may have the combined type of ADHD.
It is important to note that this quiz is for informational purposes only and should not be used as a substitute for a diagnosis from a qualified mental health professional. If you are concerned that you may have ADHD, please talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.
